January 2014 Lunch Networking Event
Graduate Women in Science and Engineering (GWISE) would like to invite you to our Lunch Networking Event. This is a great opportunity for you to learn about GWISE and meet female graduate students and faculty members from different STEM fields at MSU.

We will kick off the semester with our first event on Tuesday, October 22 at 11:30 am in the Dunn Conference room (on the 2nd floor of McCain). We will briefly introduce the group, discuss how you can get involved, and then enjoy a talk by Dr. John Nicholson of the Department of Communications. Dr. Nicholson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication. Please bring your lunch - we'll provide dessert - and enjoy meeting other women in science and engineering at MSU.
Dr. Sandra Eksioglu will be speaking to our organization on Friday, March 1st at 12:00 pm in the Elton King Room in McCain Hall. Dr. Eksioglu is an Associate Professor in the Industrial & Systems Engineering department. The title of Dr. Eksioglu talk is "How to Successfully Transition From Being a Graduate Student to an Assistant Professor". She will be sharing her experiences and giving tips about making smooth transition to life after graduate school.
Dr. Karen McNeal is the November speaker for GWISE. She will speak to our organization on Thursday, November 15th at 11:30 pm. Dr. McNeal is an Associate Professor in the Geology department. The title of her talk is "Proposal Writing Basics: How to Get started to Integrating Transdisciplinary Approaches". The focus of the talk will be at discussing how to write grant proposals and the importance of collaborating across research areas.
Graduate Women in Science and Engineering would like to invite you to our October Social Networking Event. We will be hosting our second social networking Tuesday, October 23rd from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Ptolemy's Taproom. This will be a time for us to catch up and meet other graduate women from other programs. For those of you not familiar with Starkville, Ptolemy's Taproom is located at 700 University Drive in the Cotton District.
Dr. John Nicholson will be speaking to our organization on Thursday, October 11th at 4:30 pm in the Elton King Room in McCain Hall. Dr. Nicholson is an Assisstant Professor in the Communications department. The title of Dr. Nicholson's talk is "Connections Between "The Big Bang Theory" and Reality: Implications for Women in STEM Careers and Majors". He will focus on the connections between communication and STEM majors and career selection, communication and the STEM culture as a dysfunctional symbiosis, and innoculation and resistance: Being a (Successful) Women in a Man's World.
Our first official meeting the semester will occur Tuesday, September 4th at 3 pm in the Elton King Room of McCain Hall. We are delighted to have Dr. Ed Swan joining us Tuesday. Dr. Swan is a Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department. He is also an adjunct professor in the Psychology Department at MSU. He will speak about the psychology of grad school, how to fail and succeed in grad school, hurdles to to obtaining a Ph.D., and advisors' expectations.
Graduate Women in Science and Engineering would like to welcome you back to school and welcome you to MSU if you're new this fall. We will be kicking off our second year as an organization with a social networking event on Thursday, August 30th at 5:30 pm at Halfway House. There will be discounted drinks and appetizers. This will be a time for us to catch up, as well as welcome new members to our organization. For those of you not familiar with Starkville, Halfway House is located at 409 University Drive.
We are delighted to announce that Dr. Lori Bruce will be joining us in March to speak about the “imposter syndrome” and being a female in a leadership position. More details will be available later, but go ahead and mark your calendar because you will really enjoy interacting with Dr. Bruce.
For our February meeting, we will be joined by Mr. Landon Summers from MSU Career Services. We’ll be discussing finding and transitioning to a career in industry.

We'll be spending some time with our faculty advisor, Dr. Keisha Walters. If you haven't had the opportunity to meet Dr. Walters yet, you won't want to miss it. Supporting women in STEM fields is a particular passion of hers, and she has previously led a professional development course for female students within her department.
